Conflict and Change in Healthy Congregations
September 3-October 21, 2007
Center for Anglican Learning and Leadership online course, 2451 Ridge Road, Berkeley, CA 94709
Kimberly Morgan
Nobody likes conflict; but every congregation has it. Change can be equally uncomfortable, but is inevitable for individual and organizational growth. How we approach change and conflict will shape the positive or negative impact they have on our personal lives and on our congregations. Resist change, then every attempt at change can cause tensions. But see change as God’s invitation to create the future, then change becomes the healthy norm. This course explores congregational dynamics of change and conflict, and helps lay and ordained leaders develop skills to transform conflict into consensus and a positive force for change.; $175; $135 for member of a team of 3 or more, 2 CEUs; Center for Anglican Learning and Leadership, 2451 Ridge Road Berkeley, CA 94709, (510)204-0720 ; call@cdsp.edu

Praying the Psalms
September 19-21, 2007
Immanuel Lutheran Church, 2205 34th St. SW, Missoula, MT 59801
Rev. Susan Briehl
The Psalter has been the Church's source of prayer for two thousand years. When we pray the psalms, Dietrich Bonhoeffer said we are praying with Jesus and Jesus is praying through us. When we cry the psalms, we join Jesus' lament from the cross as we, along with all of creation, await redemption and renewal. And when we sing the psalms, we sing Christ's sorrow song on behalf of all who suffer. In this workshop, we will gather for a day of learning, prayer, and song as together we enter more deeply into the treasury of the Psalms. Sessions include: Praying in the Presence of God; Praying with Creation; Praying Amid Suffering; and Praying the Promise. This workshop will also be held in at King of Glory Lutheran Church in Billings, MT on Sept. 20 and First English Lutheran Church in Great Falls, MT on Sept. 21.; $50 regular/ $45 new clergy or LPA's, 5 hours; Northern Rockies Institute of Theology, 2415 13thAve. S., Great Falls, MT 59405, (406)453-1461 ; nrit@nrit.org

The Company They Keep: C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien as Writers in Community
September 24-November 11, 2007
Center for Anglican Learning and Leadership online course, www.cdsp.edu/center_online.php
Diana Glyer
The creators of Narnia and Middle-earth, C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien, were close friends and colleagues who met frequently with a community of fellow writers at Oxford in the 1930’s and 1940s. Their writers’ community—the “the Inklings”—profoundly shaped their own work, and has left a deep mark on Anglican ethos, theology, and spiritual imagination. Students will look together at Lewis’ and Tolkien’s diary entries, personal letters, rough drafts and final works to discover the many ways these writers influenced each other. The author uses research in composition as well as the sociology of creativity to show how creative artists working in community can encourage one another.; $175; $135 for member of team of 3 or more, 2 CEUs; Center for Anglican Learning and Leadership, 2451 Ridge Road Berkeley, CA 94709, (510)204-0720 ; call@cdsp.edu

Health Ministries Certificate Program
September 2007 - July 2008
www.oates.org
Vicki Hollon
The Health Ministries movement continues to grow as nurses and other health care professionals feel called to serve in the context of their congregations and faith communities. This growth is happening at a time when the many congregations are experiencing a demographic shift due to the aging of baby boomers and an increase in individual life expectancy. Rooted in faith, health ministries provide a model for congregations to reengage the historical healing ministry of the Church. Congregational health ministries provide another opportunity for church members, trained in healthcare practices, to utilize their gifts and lead congregations in an inclusive ministry that can go beyond the four walls of a local congregation and reach deep into the needs of the community at large. The Health Ministries Certificate Program offered by the Oates Institute’s is designed as a blended educational experience that combines a weekend retreat with additional online small group study consisting of 8 – 12 persons. Participants will have the opportunity to learn from each other as well as from written presentations, case study and practicum experience, and faculty facilitation. This program is for congregational leaders including: lay leaders, Ministers of Congregational Care or Counseling, Ministers of Education, Ministers of Senior Adults, Parish Nurses, Pastors, Stephen Ministers and professional caregivers in: nursing, medicine, social work, pastoral counseling, and chaplaincy. The next peer group is scheduled to begin in September 2007. Applications are now being accepted for the fall 2007 session.
