“Theological Education For All: A Renewed Vision” is a project sponsored by the Council of Episcopal Seminary Deans and the Episcopal Church Center’s Office of Ministry Development and Office of Children’s Ministries and Christian Education. The project is funded through generous grants from the Lilly Foundation and Trinity Church Wall Street, and is led by a Steering Committee and Collateral Materials Committee.

Seminaries

Theological education is a vital part of the work of the Church. The main mission of the eleven accredited Episcopal seminaries is to provide theological education and spiritual formation to equip successive generations for faithful and effective leadership in the service of Jesus Christ.

The seminaries offer several degree-granting programs (Master of Divinity, MA, MST, ThD, STM, D. Min. and others.) A number are members of theological consortia which work together in a stimulating interdenominational setting. Some offer degree programs at extension sites far from their main campuses. All provide non-degree educational opportunities on and off-campus. They offer continuing education programs including web-based learning.

While the Episcopal seminaries are theologically diverse and reflective of their geographic context, each:

  • Is accredited by the Association of Theological Schools in North America and Canada.
  • Offers high quality education and spiritual formation within an Anglican context.
  • Stresses daily common worship and a life in Christian community.
  • Offers practical training through supervised field education and internships.
  • Provides centers for theological study that bring together many constituencies within the church and other denominations and faith traditions.

The Council of Episcopal Seminary Deans

The presidents and deans of the 11 Episcopal seminaries meet together annually to share experiences, discuss trends in theological education, search for solutions to common problems, and identify opportunities for cooperation.
